Cambridge Magazine 2017

Published monthly by Cambridge Newspapers each edition of Cambridge Magazine features a full page front cover photograph selected from my  ‘A Cambridge Diary‘ library of street photography pictures, or is specially shot by Martin Bond Photography.

The commission is unusual as each month the cover picture appears without any text overlays or other design elements – the only additional item being the masthead.

Edited by Alice Ryan, the aspirational publication is feature-led and includes creative, well-illustrated, articles about, fashion, homes, arts and culture, people and places as well as what is going on in Cambridge.

Ernulf Academy

Ernulf Academy is a secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in St Neots – it was the first 11-18 specialist performing arts college in Cambridgeshire. The new Headteacher wasn’t happy with the imagery used in their prospectus and so contacted me at late notice to meet a printing deadline. The new Headteacher is my sister and so I said yes and worked cheap.

A Dialogue with the Dalai Lama

On 16th and 17th September this year, Lord Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, now Master of Magdalene College hosted an unusual event in Cripps Court.  ‘Growing Wisdom, Changing People’: a Dialogue with the Dalai Lama was designed to ‘create a space where young people and leading thinkers and practitioners can explore in conversation with Lord Williams and His Holiness the concept of Universal Responsibility and what it can mean for the world’.

The 80-year-old monk, regarded by many Buddhists as the 14th reincarnation of their traditional spiritual leader had to endure loud protests from an organisation claiming to represent an alternative Buddhist sect.

I was asked to take a few pictures behind the scenes, some general shots of the conference and to take a group shot in the auditorium of all the delegates with Bishop Rowan Williams and the Dalai Lama. The latter I did by standing on a chair I’d placed on the stage to give me the height I needed. After only a few frames, I lost my balance and fell off the chair and right off the stage to land at the feet of His Holiness who helped me up.

Amgen Scholars Symposium

Amgen Scholars have the opportunity to work alongside experienced Cambridge University faculty members, including some of the world’s top academic scientists. They work during the summer holidays undertaking hands-on laboratory research, and actively contribute to the advancement of science. Applications from undergraduates across Europe number in their thousands but only 80 are selected – these kids are the brightest of the brightest.

A signature component of the summer program is the symposium where students hear firsthand from leading scientists working in industry and academia. Over the course of the symposium, Scholars have the chance to share their summer research projects with their peers and deepen their understanding of drug discovery and development.

This is my second year covering the event and it’s a delight to spend time again with such energetic and optimistic young people.

Sir Harry Smith Academy

Originally known as The Sir Harry Smith Secondary School and built to accommodate 600 students, the doors first opened to an intake of 360 students in September 1953. Sir Harry Smith Community College currently has over 1,200 students on roll. The majority of students at Sir Harry Smith come from Whittlesey and neighbouring villages. This is the sixth year I have been asked to capture images for the college’s main prospectus.

Stanground Academy

Stanground Academy is a co-educational academy school and specialist college for sport in Peterborough. It has capacity for around 1,800 students and every year I am asked to photograph students for their Prospectus.

It’s always challenging as many don’t want to have their picture taken whilst others photo-bomb those that do! They are however a lovely bunch and I try hard to avoid the hackneyed school pictures that depict children and instead aim to compose in a way that respects their potential as adults – I secretly hope that in the years to come they may look back at these pictures with pride.

Wormsley Cricket

Wormsley has been described as the most beautiful cricket ground in England and anyone who has watched or played cricket there will never forget the experience.

Wormsley Members and guests gathered on Wednesday 24th June 2015for the Summer Party and Cricket Match at Wormsley, the beautiful estate of the Getty family. In this sixth annual fixture, the Forum XI secured an heroic victory against the all stars Johnny Sandelson XI.

Amongst the players were Monty Panesar an English international cricketer who currently plays for Essex and Devon Malcolm who played in 40 Test matches and 10 One Day internationals for England.

Coutts Rugby Legends

Rugby legends Phil Vickery and Alex Corbisiero visited Coutts offices in Cambridge on Monday 15th June 2015 with the RBS 6 Nations Trophy. I was asked by Coutts to take pictures of guests with the two lads during the reception. Phil Vickery MBE is a former England captain and played in three Rugby World Cups earning his nickname ‘Raging Bull’. Alex Corbisiero was added to the British and Irish Lions squad for the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia and scored the Lions’ first try in their victorious third test against Australia which clinched the series.

International Forum

Forum is a business club. A private network that extends through the personal recommendation of the existing membership. Members are drawn from the senior echelons of London’s financial community, entrepreneurs, principals & owners of family offices and luxury brands.

The ‘International Forum’ was hosted for 120 Forum members from across the world at Spencer House and Kensington Palace on Thursday 20th November 2014. The day began with Lord Rothschild welcoming Forum members, followed by speeches from Dr Pippa Malmgren (former economic advisor to the White House), Lord Bell (Chairman, Bell Pottinger), and John Micklethwaith (Editor in Chief) and Dr Adrian Wooldridge (Management Editor) of The Economist.

Lodestar

Lodestar is the safest, friendliest and scrupulously tidiest festival that you could ever imagine. For parents of young children it’s an absolute dream – just wind them up and let them go! The toilets are amazingly clean as well.
